Broadway Radiology saw the Lions Mini Golf development as an opportunity to give back to our community and provide a recreational facility within Palmerston North that would benefit all families.

The Middle Districts Lions Club has started construction on its 18-hole course near Victoria Esplanade's playground and car park, which backs onto the hockey turfs.
The facility is being constructed on PNCC land within the Victoria Esplanade, backing onto the Manawatu Hockey Association complex and facing towards the children’s playground.
Included in the design is a kiosk from which the club will be able to sell refreshments (drinks and packaged ice-creams etc).
Pricing to use the facility is to be affordable for family participation and it is anticipated to be able to accommodate 80 plus people per hour.
The Lions Mini Golf Committee acknowledges the generous and spontaneous support of the local business sector and building sectors and sponsors and donors supporting this project.
The facility is owned and operated by the Lions Club of Middle Districts Charitable Trust which is the Charitable arm of the Lions Club of Middle Districts Inc. The Lions Club of Middle Districts Charitable Trust will distribute all proceeds to local worthy causes, in line with charitable purposes outline in the Trust Deed. A formal grant application and approval procedure has been developed to ensure robust assessment of each application leading to a fair and consistent way to offer support to those who request it.
The Victoria Esplanade in Palmerston North is an outstanding facility focusing on the positive reinforcement of a family environment which is safe and open for all. During recent years, the Victoria Esplanade has been considerably enhanced with the construction of bush walks, cycle tracks, a playground, junior road safety park, the ever-popular Scenic Railway, and in 2017 Wildbase Recovery Centre all of which recongnises the Palmerston North City Council’s (PNCC) desire to further enhance this wonderful facility.
The more recent weeks have been challenging for both ground works and the building team, but we are largely on track thanks to the huge effort of the G J Gardiner builders and their team of associated tradesmen. The Kiosk is looking smart and over the next 2-3 weeks will see all interior /exterior painting complete, benches and cabinetry installed and commissioning of the sound and security systems.
Externally progress has been steady with all holes poured and most with pavers affixed awaiting the matting to be installed. Most days a crew of Lions members are on site digging out gardens and barrowing topsoil leading to planting commencing..
The fence nib for the perimeter fence has been boxed and poured and the fencing is on site ready for installation.
We thought you might like to know some of the key numbers on the project so far,
- 97.5 cubic metres of concrete poured
- 30 tons of topsoil barrowed for gardens
- 4500 Edging pavers affixed
- 86 meters of boundary fence nib formed
- 3500 man- hours from Lion club members
- 450+ plants to be planted
The interest in the mini golf facility is certainly growing and based on the number of comments and enquiries will be in strong demand when opened.
We recognize that the facility has only been possible as a result of the many contributions from the construction sectors, sponsors and a wide range of supplier/trades and service providers. There is simply too many to name individually but we are incredibly grateful and fortunate to be part of such a generous community.
While there is still much to do, we are turning our attention to the myriad of finishing tasks with the hope of taking over the Kiosk from the builder at the end of the month. We remain on target to open in September which allows us some “testing” time to ensure all is running smoothly for the October school holiday opening. We will provide you more details a little closer to that time.
Update: Oct 1, 2022.
Dr Peter Dixon and General Manager, Duncan Scott at the official opening of the Lions Mini Golf facility at the Esplanade on Saturday 1st October. A good crowd met in the wind and rain to hear the speeches of thanks and gratitude to all the supporters and sponsors. They also enjoyed a round, especially Hole 3, a par3 which BRL sponsored.
Then it was time for a cuppa and a BBQ sausage! A great day had by all.
